ABSTRACT :
Synonym happens both in lexeme and paraphrase. Synonym can be divided into two kinds: near and absolute synonyms. Synonym might happened because of the differences between dialect, variety of language situation of language, nonstandard language, also social class. Synonym is created to soften several idioms which sound rude to particular societies.
Key word : synonym ,dialect ,sociolinguistic

Background :
Synonyms (synonyms), some linguists termed sameness (Jaszczolt 2002: 14), derived from the Greek synonymon, then the Romans used it when occupying Europe and England in Latin then Middle English adopted it as synonym as vocabulary used in that era. Synonyms can be defined as different phonologically and morphologically different words or phrases, but have the same meaning (cf. Leech 1977: 102; Lyons 1995: 60; Jaszczolt 2002: 13; Saeed 2003: 65; Cruse 2004: 154; and Griffiths 2006 : 26). For example,’omelette’ and 'omelet'  (Collins English Dictionary1991:1090) phonologically (spelling and pronunciation)and morphologically (suffix -ette) is different. Some linguists define synonymous as two words meaningful equivalent. In other words, equations
the meaning is noticed, but the categories and other aspects of the language are not be noticed.Synonyms do not just happen on word level or leksem, but also occurs at a greater level, the sentence. Such synonyms can be called parafrasa
(cf. Griffiths 2006:26). Griffiths (2006:26).
assumes that Andy is impudent is parafrasa of Andy is cheeky. Actually, both sentences are synonymous because impudent and cheeky have the same meaning lexically. This study aims to find the cause of the use of synonyms in English and Indonesian because English is languages that have various aspects of sociolinguistics and Indonesian language is a language controlled by the author and reader of this paper. The data source used in this study is partly taken from Collins English Dictionary
(1991)

METHODOLOGY :
The methology used in this research is qualitative. The steps undertaken in this study begin with the collection of data from several references, to obtain the necessary data on the things that are needed. Methods Library by collecting, studying and understanding reference books such as English dictionary. Stages of analysis performed to determine "the factor of synonym usage by mngumpulan refrensi and dictionary and history of synonym usage.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION
A.Type Synonym

Synonyms can be divided into two,near-synonyms and absolute synonyms ().Absolute synonym is somewhat rare in some languages, but in other languages often Occurrence absolute synonym in other languages is caused by cultural limit
(cultural bound) in the language user community. Lyons (1995: 61)
provides a requirement if two or more words are considered to be absolute synonyms, that is :
(a) all their meanings are identical;
(b)they are synonymous in all contexts;
(c)they are semantically equivalent (i.e., their meaning or meanings
are identical) on all dimensions of meaning, descriptive and non-descriptive.
In English big synonymous with large (cf. Jaszczcolt 2002: 13) because it qualifies (a), but in context his big brother and his large brother, both
have different meanings of intention. However, not on the big house and
the large house because they can replace each other
without changing the meaning of his faith. Cruse (2004: 155) adds the existence another type of synonym, the propositional synonym (propositional synonym)as a lexeme that can be replaced in any phrase with characteristic-characteristic of conditional truth (truth-conditional properties) without having any effect on those traits. Such synonyms can be found in situational dimensions.

B. Causes of Synonym Usage
The use of synonyms can occur due to dialect differences. In English, bus (English-American dialect) is synonymous with coach (English-British),press(English-Irish dialect) is synonymous with Cupboard (English-British dialect). Here is an example of synonyms contained in the dialect English-British and English-American dialects taken from Collins English Dictionary (1991).

B.1 The causes of synonyms

Synonym is inevitable in a language. The factors that lead to the emergence of synonyms are:
a. Due to the absorption process of borrowing. Introduction with language
others bring about the acceptance of new words that already exist in their own language. For example in the Indonesian language
there is already a word of results, we still accept the word achievement, and production, there is already a word evil and dirty, still accept the word immoral. This absorption not just about references to existing words in the language itself, but it also concerns referents that have not been said in their own language. In this case synonyms occur because it accepts two forms
or more of a donor language, such as books, books; schools, madrasa; advertisements; advertisements; and advertence.

b. Absorption of regional words into Indonesian. The place
Different residence also influences the vocabulary civilization that is used, although the referent is the same, for example the word rope and mine,
machetes and machetes, cassava and cassava, clay and clay, and so almost the same as this synonym class is a synonym that
occurs because of data collection from different dialects, such as deafness and deaf, afternoon and evening, and so on.

c. Meaning of emotive flavor and evaluativ value. Cognitive eating of words
the synonym is still the same, only the value of evaluativ and emotive value is different, for example the word economical, economical, and economical; miserly and stingy; miss and
damba; corpses, corpses, and carcasses; dead, died, died, died.
CONCLUSION :
From the above description it can be concluded that synonyms can occur due to dialect differences, the variety of languages (registers), euphemisms, language speech languages (speech situations), nonstandard languages, and classes social classes (cf. Saeed 2003: 65). In addition to dialect differences, synonyms are also caused by the historical use of diachronic language (historically). The formerly used word is now used to replace a word already in a non-formal language. Synonyms are also created as an attempt to soften the expression that is felt harshly by certain communities and civilized society. Synonyms can occur on a larger level, ie sentences although in Indonesian a little productive. However, in English synonyms are productive through paraphrases.
